New Heritage All The Rage for Chic Homes

Colonial interiors are seeing a clear resurgence this year, though not in its traditional form – New Heritage is a style that bridges the gap between classic and contemporary interiors.

It blends historical character with modern elements that draw on European and early colonial design influences.

James Mellan-Matulewicz, the creative director at Bobbi Beck said: “It feels like a new era for colonial interior design. With interiors being reinterpreted through New Heritage, it offers that balance of character and comfort in a way that feels current for modern interiors.”

Craftmanship leads

Central to this style there is an emphasis on quality and longevity with a clear shift towards well-crafted pieces that are designed to stand the test of time. Craftsmanship is celebrated and there is a greater investment into materials that are prioritised over fast-changing trends.

Colonial interiors, once associated primarily with traditional period properties, are being rediscovered through this New Heritage lens. This reinterpretation makes them particularly suited to contemporary living, where the balance between character and practicality is increasingly valued.

This resurgence also reflects a broader shift after years dominated by minimalism and pared-back homes, there has become a growing desire for spaces that feel warmer and full of character. Colonial interiors naturally respond to this shift, combining natural materials and refined architectural detailing to create environments that feel modern yet rooted in history.

With the recent rise of young homeowners investing in more period properties, there's a growing desire to honour original character without sacrificing modern comfort. This leads to interiors that combine colonial features and architectural heritage together with contemporary touches that feel fresh and liveable.

Fits all spaces

One of the defining strengths of colonial interiors is its flexibility, it translates across a wide range of spaces, from large living rooms and principal bedrooms to smaller home offices. It also adapts well to a range of property types, from historic homes to modern builds which makes it a versatile choice for contemporary lifestyles and maintaining a strong connection to historical design traditions.

Rather than recreating historical interiors in a literal sense, cues are taken from colonial architecture and adapting them for modern homes. The key is to introduce recognisable features in a considered way. Elements such as crown moulding, walnut furniture, hardwood flooring and statement fireplaces all help to establish a colonial feel. Front doors and stairways are also desirable elements.

Lighting plays an important role in colonial design, incorporating large chandeliers into regal dining rooms or large hallways will add a sense of scale and understated luxury to the space.

Investment

Mellan-Matulewicz added: “Homeowners want to prioritise quality over quantity by investing in well-made pieces that are built to last and then balance this with modern touches to keep the space feeling fresh and liveable. As interest in heritage-led interiors continues to grow, colonial design demonstrates how traditional influences can be thoughtfully adapted to shape modern homes in a way that feels both comforting and relevant.”
